Why Denmark is quietly winning at AI

I am writing this from Denmark.

I am here to celebrate my best friend's 50th birthday. There will be a big party, and I will get to see all the people I love. I lived here for 16 years. Denmark was my school through my 20s and 30s, the place that taught me how to work, how to trust, and how to build something that lasts.

So forgive me if this week's letter is a little personal. Being back made me notice something I had stopped seeing when I lived here. Denmark is winning at AI, and almost nobody outside the country is talking about it.

42%
of Danish companies used AI in 2025, against an EU average of 20%. A year earlier it was around 13.5%, the fastest jump in Europe. Among large Danish firms, 63% are already using AI.

That gap is not luck. It is the result of choices Denmark made decades ago, long before anyone said the word AI in a board meeting. Here is what I think is really going on.

1 / Trust is the real infrastructure

More than 97% of Danes have an active digital ID. People file taxes, read medical records, and sign contracts online without thinking twice. That only works because Danes trust the system, and the system has earned it. AI runs on data and on people willing to use it. A high-trust society produces cleaner data and faster feedback, which is exactly what AI needs. Most countries are trying to build the plane mid-flight. Denmark built the runway in the 2000s.

2 / They share the plumbing

Denmark invested early in shared digital building blocks. One national ID, secure data exchange, common standards. Then it required public institutions to reuse them instead of building their own. That sounds boring. It is also the whole game. When the basics are shared, AI has somewhere to plug in. When every department invents its own system, AI has nowhere to land.

3 / AI is a tool, not a threat

This is the part I feel in my bones as a Dane by adoption. There is very little drama here. AI is not framed as a wave that will drown everyone, or a miracle that will save them. It is treated as a capability that has to fit into a system that already works. Calm beats hype. Companies that are not afraid move faster.

4 / Small country, short distances

Denmark is small, flat, and well connected, in geography and in conversation. A good idea reaches the people who can act on it in days, not quarters. For a country of under six million people, that is a structural advantage bigger economies cannot easily copy.

Why this matters to you
The lesson is not to be Danish. You cannot import 30 years of trust. AI does not reward the company with the flashiest model. It rewards the one with clean data, systems that talk to each other, and a calm relationship with the technology. Denmark just happens to have all three by habit.

The question I would sit with this week is simple. Before you chase the next tool, are your basics in order? Is your data something an AI could actually use? Do your systems connect? Have you taken the fear out of the room?

Denmark did the unglamorous work first. That is why it is winning now.

I will be offline for a few days, eating too much cake and toasting a man I have known for half his life. Then I will be back at my desk in Portugal, thinking about how small businesses can borrow a little of this Danish calm.

Talk soon,

Mikkel

P.S. Hit reply and tell me one place where your systems do not talk to each other. That is usually where the real AI opportunity is hiding.
